What happens when millions of merrymaking people simultaneously embark on a road trip? Last year’s festive season saw 1369 fatal crashes and 1645 road fatalities. The following tips from Lion of Africa Insurance Company will help you negotiate the carnage:
- Pay all your insurance premiums.
Despite additional demands on your pocket during the festive season ensure you have enough money to pay your premiums. You will not be covered by your insurance company in the event of a claim if you have missed a payment. Keeping in mind that if you skip a premium you would have to pay double next month, which could be difficult to pay in January.
- Ensure your car is road worthy.
Check your brakes, steering, tyres (don’t forget the spare!), wheel alignment, exhaust system, possible oil and fuel leaks, headlights, indicators, stop and tail lights, windscreen wiper blades. Also service your car before taking a trip.
- Before you embark
on your journey ensure all insurance policies are in place, carry a copy on your trip and give a copy to friends or relatives.
- If you are going to travel in remote areas take appropriate spare parts like a fan belt and radiator hose with you and always keep a lifting jack and wheel spanner in your vehicle.
- Ensure your car license is up to date and you have all necessary documentation.
- Let friends and family know your route and arrival and departure times and dates.
- Check the details of your insurance cover in other countries with your insurance company.
- Prepare a first aid kit and carry essential medicines on your trip.
- Plan ahead when travelling with children so as to keep them occupied with games, music, etc.
- Stick to the law so your insurance cover remains in place. Do not drink and drive and wear your seatbelt.
- Always maintain a safe travelling distance.
- Beware of weather
and road conditions (i.e. pot holes, wet roads, livestock crossing) and adjust your speed accordingly.
- Ensure you cell phone is fully charged for emergency calls.
- Take regular breaks and swap drivers to avoid fatigue.
